liters of water
consumed by AI prompts worldwide since Jan 1, 2025

Why does AI use water?

Every time you type a prompt into ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or any AI tool, a chain reaction of water consumption begins. It happens in three ways:

The hotter the climate where a data center is located, the worse it gets. A query processed in Phoenix, Arizona can use 3–5x more cooling water than the same query processed in cooler climates like Ireland or the Pacific Northwest.

Based on ~14 billion AI queries/day at ~1.5 liters per query (including data center cooling and power grid water).  Sources: The Conversation · Profolus · TechCrunch · World Economic Forum
